Name: Desiree Magat
Team: Solar Boat/Electrical/Solar
How long you’ve been in Engineering: 4 years
Leadership Position Description (what you do as
the team leader): Solar Boat Team Leader
What got you interested in Engineering in the
first place: The solar cars and solar boats were the major projects
that definitely got me interested in Engineering. I heard about the
Engineering program through my brother-in-law, Chris Soto, who was
also part of the Build Your Dream Vehicle Team. He was the one that
convinced me to transfer into Los Altos High School,
and be a part of the Engineering program.
Favorite thing about Engineering: The things I
like most about Engineering are the people, the student driven
projects, and especially test-driving of the solar vehicles and
solar boats.
Most memorable moment in Engineering: My most
memorable moment would have to be the first time I steered the solar
boat at the Solar Cup competition. I remember being nervous and at
the same time anxious to race against other high school students
competing in the Solar Cup. I recall having this sudden adrenalin
rush right when I first pushed that throttle on the boat forward and
sped off on the water.
Projects Worked On and what grade you were in:
Solar Boat (9th, 10th, 11th,
12th)
Skills
USA
(10th)
Build Your Dream Vehicle (10th, 11th)
ZEV Challenge (12th)
Shell Eco-marathon
Future Plans: In college, the major I would like
to pursue is Biomedical Engineering (Biotechnology). I am interested
in Biomedical Engineering because of the impact I can have on
society. Some day, I would like to make an enhancement on the biotic
heart or even invent a whole new medical device that will save
millions of lives.
