Name: Ann Chong
Team: Oversee all teams
How long you’ve been in Engineering: I’ve been in
the 5th period class since sophomore year, but I worked
on Build Your Dream Vehicle and Solar Boat during my freshman year.
Leadership Position Description (what you do as
the team leader): Project Manager.
As project manager, I work among the teams to establish
deadlines and coordinate tasks to reduce wasted time and effort.
What got you interested in Engineering in the
first place: I first got interested in Engineering in eighth grade
after I listened to a presentation made about the program.
I thought it was very interesting and the fact that it
involved alternative energy was the clincher.
I knew that I wanted to get involved so I took the
Introduction to Computer Science class the summer before my freshman
year.
Favorite thing about Engineering:
The people here and the feeling that you did something
significant. My fellow
students are the most down-to-earth people I know.
I can trust them entirely and I can count on them to get
their work done. The
feeling that I get when I get a task done or resolve a problem is
one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced.
Not many people have the opportunities that this program
provides and I’m eternally grateful for being given the chance to
work in the program.
Most memorable moment in Engineering:
My most memorable moment in Engineering is when the solar
array that I worked on for the 2006 solar boat, The Leviathan,
for about five months was destroyed after the conformal coating
cured incorrectly. I had
tabbed individual cells, strung the cells together, attached the
strings on the substrate, soldered the interconnects together, put
in diodes, and made it work.
When I read the voltage on the day that we finished, I was so
happy. However, it was
short-lived, since the conformal coating that should have been clear
ended up frosty.
Projects Worked On and what grade you were in:
Build Your Dream Vehicle, Dynamic Innovations - Sparta (9th)
Solar Boat, Corsair (9th)
Build Your Dream Vehicle, Dynamic Innovations -
Dodge Neon RO (10th)
Solar Shadow III (10th)
SkillsUSA - VICA Quizbowl (10th)
Build Your Dream Vehicle, Dynamic Innovations -
Di400 (11th)
Solar Boat, Leviathan (11th)
Infusion (12th)
DARPA (12th)
Solar Boat (12th)
Future Plans:
The engineering academy has developed my preexisting affinity
for engineering. I love making sure processes are
efficient and find new solutions to problems.
I hope to attend a four-year university and major in Chemical
Engineering.
After getting a Bachelor's degree I want to pursue graduate
school. I eventually want to work with
alternative energy and advance the field.
